Can Blogging Cause Trouble?

March 19, 2008

We’ve talked a lot over the year about how we need to stay safe when blogging. You cannot reveal too much personal information about yourself or your family when you are online. But even though teachers talk about these things with the kids in their classes, some schools are shutting down their classroom blogs. Mr. Raisdana, (the teacher in Qatar whose class we were just beginning to connect with) lost his job when people objected to some of the links he posted (nothing nasty or improper). Mr. Upton, a teacher in Australia has had his class blogs shut down by his nation’s department of education  while they are investigated. I’m curious: what would you think if your blog was suddenly shut down? Would it effect you? Would you surprised or angry? Do you think there has been any benefit for you personally to having a blog this year? Leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts.

Hmm… I think Mr. Raisdana shouldn’t have had his blog shut down (honestly, he did NOTHING wrong.) but Mr. Upton should’ve given his students a few more years before introducing them to blogging.
Now if OUR blog was shut down, I’d be a little dissapointed at first, because I would’ve lost an outlet to express myself through. I’d be a little suprised that our blogs would be shut down- we’ve had them for about half a year now and no one seems to have shown any resistance.
This blog opened my eyes to the world of blogging. I wouldn’t care too much if they were shut down (I could just start my own, frankly) but it did leave me with a small audience right off the bat, which is nice.
I would miss it, sure, because I know few teachers in the world are willing to give us the opprotunity, but I’d get over it quickly.

  • 3.    Kelsey  |  March 25th, 2008 at 1:53 pm

Hey Mr.Fisher, I think this is wrong because their isn’t much personal information on them. If there is alot of personal information, on them I would say it should be shut down.
The blogs were also for school, so what is the big deal if there is a link to the teachers personal blog if it is for school.

  • 4.    Keplyn  |  March 25th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

Well, If my blog was suddenly shut down I would not feel to bad because I don’t use it that often. But if I used it everyday I would be very mad. I would want to know excatly why.
I think having a blog this year has been fun. I got a peek into some of my classmates’ lives.
As for the whole thing about cancelling blogs, I think it is, well, stupid! Any teacher who has had or having kids do blogs most likley has gone over the do’s and don’ts of internet saftey.

  • 5.    Katie  |  March 25th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Blogging can be safe and it can also be unsafe, it is important to maintain a safe barrier of information that is given out to the public. With problems such as blogs being shut down, and even people getting fired. I, in my own opinion think this is not right, they did nothing wrong but try and improve their students writing skills and open there mind to a world full of public opinions. Though things can happen such as inappropriate comments, I think that the teachers are giving the students their best interests by maintaining that barrier. Public opinion is something that everyone will be exposed to at one point in their life, so why not show them what is right and wrong right now?

So in all I do not agree with this assumption as to shut down blogs and fire teachers, they are doing their best to open students minds to a whole new way of learning.

  • 6.    Mike  |  March 25th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

I think that it would be suprising cause im so used to it and it would be pretty lame because we tend to use our blogs a lot and I don’t think it should be a problem that kids should have their blogs shut down. FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS

    Peace Outt!

  • 7.    Scott  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Hello Mr. Fisher I think that when that one guy got fired from putting his own personal blog on a link on the kid’s blog. I think the reason why he did it was because he was trying to show the kids how a real blog looks like and mold their minds to create blogs that look like his. That guy’s blogs that got cancelled was bogus! I personally don’t think that he would do something like that on a school blog and I highly doubt that he would do it on another one either (even though I don’t know him). If I were a teacher (which I won’t be in the future) I would let my student’s blog because I think it is a good way to learn how to write and it is pretty fun. I also think it is a good way to find resources on the web, say for pictures information and such. I really think both of those people shouldn’t have gotten in trouble. Bye Mr. Fisher

  • 8.    Hannah  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Hi… Now I have been thinking about this post and I think that there might be a point behind this. You see the class from Australia got put down because they thought it was not safe. It might not be because how would they know if people are good and bad? do they really know what to look for? I also think they shouldn’t of got put down because their teacher could keep a good eye on them and know when something is going on. The other teacher I am a little more stuck on. I don’t think that he should of got fired and got his blog taken away. He had a harmless like which probably didn’t have anything bad on it since he knew it was linked to a school blog. I guess there is a reason behind that so I cant really do anything about that because adults overcome children in these kind of situations in words but not in our minds.

  • 9.    Logyn  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:07 pm

    Hey Mr. Fisher
I don’t find that right that 2 teachers got into alot of trouble from showing their students a blog. Even though that blogging can be unsafe somtimes it still isnt right. It’s not like anything bad had happened during blogging. If there wasn’t any personal information shown that could cause something bad to happen I find that it is right. I would be both surprised and angry that my blog got taken away. I think its cool to have my own blog in school this year. Its something different also a different way of learning.
I hope that Mr. Raisdana will hopefully get his job back.

  • 10.    randy  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Hey Mr. Fisher if our blog suddenly shut down I would be a bit disappointed. Not really though like yeah it is all right but like I would be like what ever if it did shut down. It would not really effect me that much. I do not think I would be angry or surprised.

  • 11.    Taylor  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

HI i dont think it is right to take away there blogs i wish it would have been diffrent. I dont think it was right to accuse him and take it away but that is okay. I wish it would have been diffrent but what can you do

  • 12.    Sara  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

I don’t think that Mr. Raisdana’s kids’ blogs should have been disabled because if they didn’t do anything wrong, why shouldn’t they still have their blogs?
Wouldn’t you be able to just make a new blog if yours got disabled? If my blog got disabled, I would just make a new one.

    Sara.

  • 13.    Tyler  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

The truth is, I wouldn’t really mind if my blog was shut down but I would still be mad about it and would want to know why. I think it is wrong that Mr. Raisdana got fired because of blogging. He didn’t have anything nasty or inappropriate on his blog, A picture of the kids in his class on his blog isn’t a big deal. The parents just over reacted. Even though we should be careful about what we say and put on the internet, I find this punishment was wrong and unnecessary. Same goes to Mr. Upton‘s student blogs. They were just trying to learn, as a class, about different kinds of communication and writing, it wasn’t like they were giving away every single personal information about them for the world to see.
Well there are my thoughs about this. I would like to see others. Time to go though, see ya!

  • 14.    Skyler  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I don’t think they should have shut his blog down. They didn’t really have a right. So a few people complained, big deal. It would become a problem if unappropriate things started to happen. Like if kids starting getting scary or creepy comments on their blogs from people they don’t know.
And if my blog already did kind of shut down… And I actually kind of do miss it. Blogging was sometime fun. Sure it sometimes was boring but so what.
Fact is, they should have just told him that they didn’t want the link on there instead of shutting it down.

  • 15.    Skye  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

I think that is insane. Just because they write blogs and he should them a blog that wasnt improper that he made doesnt mean that he should get fired. I mean if he should have showed them out of school would he still get fired? Or what if one of the kids found his blog on there own time? Idont think that is right, he should only be fired if he showed the kds something bad.

  • 16.    shyla  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

The shutting down of blogs is something that really confuses me. It doesn’t make much sense. Notice, with Mr. Raisdana’s case, that after they explain how he has linked his personal blog in his school blog, that after this they don’t have much explaination. This is not inappropriate, improper, or “nasty.” I sure can’t think of one. Except for the maybe cyber bullying and sexual predators, this is stupid that kids can’t blog.

This is an unessescary and foolish topic for people to focus on. Take the time out to focus on things that matter is what I would like to say to the people shutting down these blogs.

  • 17.    Lana  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Well. I think that’s the lamest thing I have ever heard. There not giving out any information on themselves so whats the big problem and getting fired because of it well that is just ridiculous , like if they had to stop blogging well oh kay but he shouldnt of lost his job over blogging. He should probley get his job back.

  • 18.    K@te  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:20 pm

    Mr. Fisher:
I Can kind of see why the government is taking away blogs, its to keep the kids that they are teaching safe. But I don’t think it is right at all. The Government is pretty much taking away their freedom of speech by not letting them write freely and speak their mind. I think it is wrong to have fired someone over a blog! Exspechally when they did nothing wrong. That is my opinion.

  • 19.    Tiffany  |  March 25th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

I think that its pretty dumb that they shut down the blogs, just because of a couple parents that don’t agree with that.
In my opinion I would be very angry because I think having a blog lets us show what we have to say and what we think, about many of our personal opinions, and lets up have a voice and speak. The things that happened with Mr. Rasidana, I think honestly shouldn’t have happend because he wasn’t doing anything wrong.
Its pretty sad when our world is constantly gettin mad over things like that at eachother, then loosing our own job just for trying t show the things we can do, online. Not anything inappropriate, but things like our own hobbies, and we loose our job.

    -Tiff.

    Hey,
I think it’s wrong that some blogs are getting shut down. I know that threre are a lot of stuff that arnt aloud on some blogs but if they are like kids writting on there blog like a jornal then aI think they shouldent shut it down on them because of some other people.

    Hi everyone,
I am a student in Mr.Raisdana’s class and I would just like to reply to just about every comment posted. For one Mr. Raisdanas blog isn’t shut down (because then my link would be dead) he just had to remove all our links and the link from his personal blog (I will not make that a link). Also, if my blog was shut down I would be outrageous (forgive me if I spelt that wrong, I am terrible at spelling). This is because I have put in a lot of work in my blog.
    Thank you
    David

  • 25.    David  |  April 1st, 2008 at 10:20 am

Also, I forgot to mention that I have quite a few readers so some others might be angry if my blog shut down.
    Sorry for forgetting this

  • 26.    zaolae  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 11:25 am

I would get angry if my blog would shut off because maybe someone would’ve hacked it and I would never trust websites. If my blog were to be shut off, it would affect me because of the people that are dared to hack something that doesn’t belong to them. ☺ I would actually get angry because of the hackers trying to get in and trying to ruin my blog.
About the teacher from Qatar, I think that was really unfair just because he put links that people objected to it. :-(
Having a blog did benefit my life because I get to learn about people that are so far away from home and we can’t even get to see them closely. That’s it for my answer……

  • 27.    Critian  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 11:30 am

I think that what you showed in your blog is very informative and that it is true blogging can cause you a big problem. I also think that it is wrong for them to shut the blogs becuse there are losing education but what they can do to fix this prooooblem is that they can make there blogs private. Once they make there blogs private only the people that they will permit to access it can look at it so there can’t be a problem.

Thanks for the great information and I think that it is sad for a teacher to get fired just because he was blogging and it was never nothing bad.

Since we know have all that technology lots of bad things can happen so bye.

It was nice talking to you

    THANKS FOR INFO

  • 28.    Manuel  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 11:31 am

For me it wouldn’t really matter. The reson why is vbecause if they shut it down is because they want us to be preteected, and if we keep the blogs we can paossibly het hurt. So if out school board shuts it down i would be neutral.

  • 29.    Zaira  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 11:34 am

Hi. I think that what happenned to those two teachers was wrong because they didn’t have any inappropriate things in their blogs. Their blogs shouldn’t of just been shut down because some parents didn’t like their blogs. If this blog were to shut down i would probably just be surprised about it. This blog has allowed me to talk to new students and to collaborate with them. Working with these student has been a new experience for me.

  • 30.    Juan  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 11:35 am

I would get mad because my privacy would have been invaded. People have seen and could have changed my stuff. I would also be surprised because someone could actually hack into my struff and possibly change it. I think that there has been benefits from having this blog this year. We have been able to shre what things are happening in our lifes and in school. We also have been able to communicate and collaborate with students from other countries. So this blog really has helped us.

i think it sad that the deparment of education shutdown the blogs in Alstrala. i think thats mestup because the DOE is practcaly saying that they arnt aloud to have contact with others in other counrtys.

  • 35.    Daniel  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 11:57 am

I think this is wrong because their isn’t much personal information on them. The blogs were also for school, so what is the big deal if there is a link to the teachers personal blog if it is for school. It should have just kept going for their school. If it was such a big deal block or just don`t access it

  • 36.    Estuardo  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 11:59 am

I really see no reason in shutting down blogs because I dont see any person’s information being given away. It really wouldnt affect me if mines was shut down because if I want to, I can start another one in a different site. But what would bother me a little are those entries that I made because those would get erased. I would probly be surprised at first because I’d go on to find out that I have no blog anymore.

  • 37.    Francesca  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:00 pm

    wow. this is really interesting.

Why would they shut it down? If the link didn’t contain anything offending then what is the deal? As long as the students don’t post any kind of information about them or their family then i don’t see any problem about it. Blogging is where kids (or anyone) can express their feelings, share happy times, talk about issues that is happening around the world, etc. I don’t see the reason why they would just take it away just like that, and losing his job because of this makes it even more saddening.

If my blog would’ve been shut down, i would be pretty dissapointed. Our blog is where we communicate with other people around the world. That’s what makes it fun. We get to see different insights on many different things from many different people. It opens up more perspectives to us other than our own. If someone were to take this away from us, i would be surprised and angry at the same time.

I think that our blogs had many benefits. It taught us the right way to communicate and it taught us what teamwork really is.

I’m sorry for what really happened. I hope that you guys (in Qatar) can find a way to renew your blogs and start all over again.

  • 38.    Eduardo  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:03 pm

If my blog shut down, I would be suprised. It would be kind of scary if this happened because a lot of the things on the internet are blogs. We use some of these blogs to learn about things for Social Studies, Religion, Etc. What if the president shut down our blogs? It would be scary and it would go against the 1st Amendment. The 1st Amendmend states that all people have the”Freedom of Speech, Press, and Petition.” We have the right to put what we want on the internet to help others. I think there has been a benefit having a blog this year because I have been teaching my peers and my peers have been teaching me. This is what I think if the nation would shut down our blogs.

  • 39.    justo  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:04 pm

I would be surprised at first if my blog would be shut down, because I think that mr. Raisdana shouldn’t have lost his job because of blogging when in the first place he didn’t say anything bad, or improper.

  • 40.    jhosselinne  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:05 pm

I honestly don’t see why they did shut it down or had to remove all of their links. The blogs aren’t used for anything bad they are strictly for learning purposes. It provides us with interaction skills that we will need later on. If our blog was shutdown I’d be upset at first because i feel that we have a right to have it.

  • 41.    Phillip  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:07 pm

I personally think that it is unjust to take away all of the persons blogs just for comments that they consider wrong. if the people have a problem with someones blog they could have just left comments asking if they could take the blogs out. If they just remove the person’s blog then all of their hard work goes down the drain.

  • 42.    Maria  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:11 pm

I think my blog was suddenly shut down
i would find out why and probably be a little
bit angry for the reason that i had some
memorial stuff in it where i can go back to
it in the future and remember things that i did
    in this grade.

Also staying safe in the internet has always
been a big rule to internet users so i agree.

  • 43.    Adolfo  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:11 pm

    I agree with mr fisher

  • 45.    Adrian D.  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:13 pm

I would be kind of surprised, because I’m always used to doing blogs in my class. If owuld be weird for not having blogs anymore. In those blogs, we would out everything. We would express ourselfs. And i guess that is all I have to say about it.

  • 46.    vanessa  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Hey Mr.Fisher i think it was wrong that they shut down the blogs. I would be upset if they shut our blogs down. Our blogs is something where i can express what i feel. I also think that Mr.Raisanda was treated unfairly. He shouldnt have been fired. He did nothing wrong.

  • 47.    Wendy  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:35 pm

I think that it was wrong for the school to shut down the blog only because some parents didn’t agree with the blogs. If i was Mr.Rasidana I would be very angry because in a blog you expresses your opinion to say and write what you think.I think that it wasn’t right for the school to shut down his blogs and for him to lose his job. I think his student really miss him so the school should rehire him agian because I think this is afecting the students . They must really miss him. I think that it is not right what the school did he was just showing his opinions and expressing himself he wasn,t doing anything inappropate.

  • 48.    Lyndsay  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:41 pm

I think that people should be more careful of what they put in their blogs away. I would be angry if some shut down my blog. I think before I put athing in my blog because other look at it and might dislike what it have. So I think if you shutdown someones blog it is for a good point. I think that there is no benefit for you personally to having a blog this year because if you really think about it it is pointless me, myself and I think that the only one reason you should have a blog if you are working with an other class out of the state and your doing projects with them and your tell a little about yourself you need one to get to know each other. That is that only reason why I have it. But, if I didn’t do that I would not have a blog. So I think next time I would check before posting anything on my blog and I will never put any personal information about myself or my family where someone could see it so they will not shut down my blog.

  • 49.    Bob Dope  |  May 27th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

I’m not in your class but I’m particapating in the comment challenge and had to leave something so personally I would be majorly happy that our blogs got cancelled because our blogging teacher doesnt let us post things on our thoughts, oppinions, we dont get to be ourselves or unique. We only post on dumb things with facts only. I love how your classes blogs are so much more of a fun thing we’re poeple can tell eachothers personality instead of some websites or books notes on subjects :) well, uhm Bye

  • 50.    Elizabeth  |  June 2nd, 2008 at 2:49 pm

    Hi,

My name is Elizabeth, and I live in Oregon. I am participating in the Comment Challenge, and I was reading your front page. I think that I would be a bit indignant if someone shut down my blog without asking permission….although, in all honesty, I hadn’t really considered it before. Interesting thought….

I guess it makes you realize that you really do have to be careful on the internet. A lot of people loosen up over time and start spilling out personal information, but what most of us forget is that it can still be viewed by anybody.

    Anyway, great post.

    Sincerely,
    Elizabeth :)
